David Baker

David Baker is an innovative jazz double bassist currently based out of Colorado. His style incorporates a hard-swinging drive with a sensible modernity achieving a sound uniquely his own. David has been actively touring and performing nationally for ten years and has performed with his own groups at venues such as Dazzle™ in Denver, Colorado and The Velvet Note™ in Atlanta, Georgia. Recently, David was awarded the First Alternate position in the 2019 International Society of Bassists’ Jazz Performance Competition. Likewise, he has had the fortunate opportunities to share a stage briefly with The New York Voices, Antonio Hart, The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Clay Jenkins, Conrad Herwig, and more.

David was raised in Atlanta, Georgia to a musical family and discovered a love for jazz early on. Over time, and after years of classical violin study, David found a love for the double bass. After making the switch, within six years he had recorded on a half dozen records and became a top call bassist in his local musical scene. David currently leads and co-leads a handful of touring and recording ensembles including: SBST, David Baker Trio, and the Sjobeck Baker Duo.

David’s introduction to Moddl Records™ is his debut release as a sole leader in the jazz genre: Minus Piano (2019). The record takes the tried-and-true tradition of tenor saxophone trios and adds a creative spin: what if a piano-less trio did a tribute to pianists? David took this concept and wrote arrangements on tunes associated with the selected pianists and gave an innovative, modern twist to the chord-less trio format. The pianists honored include Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Red Garland, Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Ahmad Jamal, and Count Basie. Look out for this release coming soon!
